Behind The Scenes

The legacy of Bob NyeDad in NYC wearing Liberace's Norwegian Silver Fox Fur coat that he purchased on the Liberace Auction in LA in 1987.
Bob has made appearances on both The Maury Povich Show in 1994 and The David Letterman Show in 1995, sharing some of his eccentric experiences. He was also known for being the largest private collector of Liberace items he had purchased at the Liberace auction in Los Angeles, California following the death of Mr. Showmanship.
Bob also obtained a record in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1988 for construction of the world's largest and loudest electronic theater touring organ called The Golden Spirit of America. After being a pilot for nearly 40 years, Bob decided to retire his wings with the plane seen in the aerial shots of Out of Control. October 25, 1998 was the last flight entered into his flight log book. Bob had also been a police officer with the City of Reading, Pennsylvania during the 1950's & 1960's over a course of ten years before retiring in February 1969 to pursue his music business full time. He later retired from Bob Nye's Pianos & Organs in November 1997. Among his many accomplishments over the years, Bob has been recognized for his good will where, on one occassion, he donated numerous organs to the Salvation Army and also for rescuing a family from their burning home one morning when he was on his way home from the overnight patrol as a cop just to name a few. Bob admits he has made mistakes over the years, but unlike most, he felt that his story had to be told for better and for worse through the movie Out of Control. Bob retired in the fall of 1997 from his music business, Bob Nye's Pianos & Organs in Reading, PA, and began writing his memoirs from his days as a city cop and businessman/entertainer extraordinaire. A local celebrity most of his life, Bob felt that his life story would make a great movie. A determined Bob asked his daughter Bobbi, a broadcast television professional, to assist him in making his idea become a reality, stating that he was going to do this with or without her help. Against advice from Bobbi's professional peers who were concerned that she was too close to the material to be able to seperate the professional side from the personal side, a reluctant, but driven Bobbi started work on the project with her father. A professional magazine article-writing friend of Bob's said that the script would take a year to write, but Bob didn't want to wait. Bobbi took her father's memoirs and began to adapt a scene outline for the movie plot, learning good things and bad things about her father along the way. She then asked her scriptwriting grad school friend, Tamara Sobotka, to write the screenplay for Hometown Legend, which originally had draft titles of See You At The Top and Flash Forward. As Tamara feverishly went to work on the script, consulting with Bob and Bobbi about the scene scenerios, auditions were held in June of 1998 to find the cast. Nearly 100 actors, actresses and extras were selected and production began August 1,1998. After production wrapped in early 1999, Bobbi felt that something was still missing. After editing Hometown Legend and pursuing various distribution venues in 2000, she decided to utilize much of the same footage, enhance it with new scenes and further develop the character of the female lead, Renee. After going back into production in 2001, Bobbi returned to post production, turning Hometown Legend into Out of Control with a new storyline and with the majority of the scenes still based on her father's life experiences. All total, both movie versions had been re-edited in their entirety for a combined total of six times. Out of Control was submitted to the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 and did make the first cut for the festival, but unfortunately was not chosen to screen. In January 1999, Bob, Bobbi and some crew traveled to New Orleans, Lousiana to exhibit Hometown Legend at the National Association of Television Programming Executives (NATPE) convention. Over the course of several days, the team discussed the movie with the many people who stopped by their booth. In 2003, Bob and Bobbi traveled to Los Angeles, California, to attend the NATPE TV Producer's Boot Camp where they met with other independent producers who were also there to learn how to pitch their production ideas to Hollywood studio acquisition executives. Bobbi returned to the Boot Camp in 2004 & 2005 to continue her independent producer training. In Memory- Since Out of Control went into production, several cast and crew members passed away through illness and tragedy. It is with the warmest, most sincere heart-felt memories and condolences that Bobbi and the cast & crew of Out of Control wish to remember these dedicated individuals and their passion for their art and dedication to independent film: Dr.John Callahan Dr. Eugene Huber Jennifer Lewis Linda Schneck Nathan Schneck Christine Tedesco Ed Woomer "Big Eddie" Damon B.
